Family Portrait Tips

Before heading to our session, be sure to plan for the event in order to get the best results.

Preparation should include:

  • Clothing choices
  • Jewelry choices
  • Hair styling / makeup

Avoid wearing clothing with words, logos or pictures on them, unless it’s part of a theme.

We suggest families choose solid color schemes as coordinating clothing with family members is paramount to having stunning results.

The Test:

Lay out all clothing; shoes, socks - everything should be included.

Step back and take a look. If your eye goes to any one item in particular, you can be certain that the same thing will happen in the shot. That item should be changed.

Tips:

  • Dark colors tend to slenderize while light colors can add weight to a subject.
  • Bright colors draw attention away from the face.
  • Clothing below the waistline should be darker than above.
  • Long sleeves and long pants are a MUST for both formal and casual portraits. Bare arms and legs compete with the face and are a distraction.

Last but not least:

Do not eat on the way to the session. If you're ever going to spill or dribble, this is when it will happen. If you must have a beverage on the drive to the studio, plan for clear bottled water.

And the most important tip of all… have fun!
